If you’re in sales or commercial and eyeing a move into medical affairs, you’re not alone. Medical roles often look like the promised land: less sales pressure, more science, and (supposedly) more respected. But before you jump, let’s unpack what really changes — and what doesn’t.
Why People Leave Commercial for Medical
Less quota stress. No monthly targets hanging over you.
Scientific focus. You get to talk evidence, trials, and clinical practice instead of closing scripts.
Different career ceiling. Medical can lead to global roles, field medical leadership, or cross-functional positions.
The Myths vs. Reality
“Medical is more strategic.” Not really. Commercial sets strategy. Medical influences — but usually reacts to business direction.
“Medical has more respect.” Depends. HCPs may respect the “non-promotional” angle, but internally, medical can get sidelined if they’re not adding obvious value.
“Medical is easier.” Wrong. You trade sales pressure for the challenge of proving impact without revenue metrics.
What You Might Miss From Commercial
Clear wins. In sales, you know exactly if you’re up or down. In medical, success is fuzzier.
Adrenaline. If you love the hunt, you’ll find medical slower and less competitive.
Compensation upside. Most commercial roles out-earn medical at the same level, thanks to commission/bonus.
How to Make the Jump (If It’s Right for You)
Bridge your skills. KOL relationships, insights, and scientific discussions can carry over — but reframe them for a non-promotional context.
Target bridge roles. Medical information, med ops, hybrid “medico-commercial” projects are easier transitions than shooting straight for MSL.
Be clear on why. If you just want “out” of commercial, you might land in a role that doesn’t suit you long-term.
So… Is It Greener?
Sometimes. If you’re craving a slower pace, less quota stress, and deeper science, medical might be a better fit. But if you thrive on speed, clear targets, and financial upside, commercial is probably the stronger lane.
Bottom line: It’s not about “better.” It’s about alignment. Pick the function that matches your energy, strengths, and long-term vision.
