New Year, New Career: Your Path from Agency to Pharma

As we open a new year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on your career journey and think about where you want to be. For those of you working in agencies—whether it’s med comms, advertising, or PR—there often comes a point where you think, “What’s next?” For me, that moment came in 2017 when I transitioned from an agency to an in-house role in pharma. It was one of the best decisions I ever made, and I haven’t looked back.

Here's my story.

Why I Made the Leap

Working in an agency taught me invaluable skills—data analysis, writing, strategy creation, creativity, and project management. But after years of trying to second-guess clients’ needs and decipher their thoughts, I realised I wanted more. I was tired of dealing with dreadful briefs and clients who didn’t know how to fully utilise agency talent.

I saw so much potential in the agency world that wasn’t being tapped. Agencies are full of incredibly talented professionals, yet often, clients view them as task-doers rather than strategic partners. I wanted to be on the other side, where I could empower agencies, share critical data, and involve them deeply in the bigger picture.

When I made the transition to an in-house pharma role, I finally felt like I was in the thick of it—shaping strategies, collaborating with stakeholders, and truly making an impact. And the best part? All the skills I developed in the agency world transferred seamlessly to my new role.

Agency Skills Are Your Superpower

If you’re considering making the move to pharma, let me tell you this: agency professionals bring something unique to the table.

  • You know the data. You’ve worked with it, analysed it, and presented it.

  • You’re strategic. You understand how to craft a story that aligns with a brand’s objectives.

  • You can sell. Whether it’s pitching ideas or presenting campaigns, you know how to communicate effectively.

  • You’re creative. You bring fresh perspectives that can solve problems in innovative ways.

  • You can run a project. Tight deadlines, multiple stakeholders, shifting priorities—you’ve mastered it all.

Not everyone in pharma has these skills, and they’re highly valued. The rest, like matrix working or internal processes, you’ll pick up quickly.

Reframe Your Approach

When you’re preparing for a move into pharma, shift your mindset. Don’t think of it as “I’m looking for a job.” Instead, approach every interview as an opportunity to share your incredible expertise and unique value. You’re not just a candidate, you’re a problem-solver, a strategist, and a leader.

Focus on what you can control:

  • Highlight your transferable skills.

  • Communicate your unique selling points (USP).

  • Share examples of how you’ve driven success in your current role.

The rest is up to the hiring manager.
